Where Wood Meets Art

Welcome to Black Butte Woodworks. We transform overlooked urban logs into one-of-a-kind pieces that celebrate imperfection and ingenuity. What others see as flaws—cracks, knots, embedded metal or stone—we see as an opportunity to refine design, challenge convention, and create something extraordinary.

Most of the lumber we mill comes from Russian Olive, a noxious invasive species in Montana. While its exterior is rough and uninviting, the wood inside is stunning—much like the philosophy behind our work. We don’t craft what’s ordinary, nor do we want to. We take inspiration from Black Butte, the tallest peak in the Gravelly Range, standing apart from everything around it. Our pieces do the same—bold, distinct, and built to last.
